CNY countdown

12 more days to go and it will be Chinese New Year. During these few days, the shopping malls will be filled with people rushing to complete their CNY shopping. As for me, I am not buying any new clothes or shoes. I just need to get some items to give my parents-in-law when we visit them during the first day of CNY. Nothing expensive, just some simple symbolic food items such as mandarin oranges and peanuts.

So are you looking forward to CNY? :)

  6. Hello "Are We There Yet!",

Yes, CNY is also known as the Spring Festival. I agree that it is nice to celebrate two New Years back to back. CNY is the new year according to the chinese lunisolar calendar. :)

  16. Hello Jennifer, that's exciting - to have a road trip with family. May you have a great time then!

Hehe, I only have a tiny garden, not worthy of your visit but perhaps one day. :)

  17. I remember making a big, paper dragon for CNY, when I was a kid. And a friend's mom, who was Chinese, gave us tiny red paper envelopes with a penny for luck.

  18. Hi Jamie, this year is the year of snake so the decorations for this year is all about snakes. Nice that you experienced some bits of CNY before such as getting the angpows (red paper envelopes containing money). :)

  19. How fun! A snake theme! I didn't realize the red envelopes were called angpows. I have some good memories of learning about other cultures and their holidays. I'm definitely going to celebrate Chinese New Year with my girls when they are old enough to learn from the experience.

  20. Hi Jamie, yes, that would be nice - to celebrate CNY with your girls when they are older so that they can learn about the holidays of other cultures. Ang means red and Pow means envelope in Hokkein (a Chinese dialect).

    1. Yes, I agree that adults do not need new clothes every cny but children do because they outgrow their clothes so quickly.
